Types of Deadlocks for Doors
Hook bolt deadlocks can be installed on storefronts with narrow stiles made of aluminum sliding doors to enhance security and strength of the lock. These locks have keys on both sides to allow for greater flexibility.
To accurately determine the size of a new lock for your door, you must first determine the case's depth (or backset). This is the distance between the edge of the front door and the centre of the latch hole.
Tubular Latch
The tubular latch is the most popular kind of door latch. It's simple to install and is an absolute favorite among DIY enthusiasts and Joiners alike. It's also available in a large assortment of sizes, shapes and quality levels to fit any door handle style.
A tubular latch is a rectangular steel casing with an latch bolt and a latch follower with springs (also called a striker). When you open the door, the latch retracts, allowing you to shut and lock it. When you close the doors, the latch bolt springs back and grabs the edge of frame to secure the door shut.
If hook locks fitting a tubular latch, you'll need to decide on the height you'd like the latch rest on the door. Many people believe that a latch and handle should be set at a height of a centimeter above the floor. This is not always the situation. The latch on a door knob must be placed in the middle of the rail. This is where the majority of the weight is transferred by the door when it is open and closed.
The position of the hole in the door and strike plate with a pencil once you have decided the location where the latch should go. Drill pilot holes to secure the plate. After you've drilled the pilot holes, you can use a countersink to make sure that the plate's back will be in line with the door once it's screwed in place.
If you want a heavier-duty alternative to the standard tubular latch, you should consider selecting a double-sprung version. The door will close more smoothly when you use this latch because it comes with an additional spring that moves the tongue. It also features a heavy-action spring on the spindle follower, ensuring that levers or doorknobs return to their horizontal positions following each use.
After you've attached the latch to the door, you'll need install a strike plate onto the frame. The strike plate is the component that is placed in the gap left by the latch after it is closed. You should mark the area in which you'd like to place the strike plate on the frame section surrounding it. Then, you can use your knife to create an area that is square for the plate, and then remove it.
Cylindrical Latch
Interior doors are usually equipped with cylindrical locks. They are commonly found in homes and offices and have a wide range of applications. They are similar to mortise locks, however, they are much easier and faster to set up. They do not require a "mortise" or pocket be cut into the frame of the door as mortise locks do. The bore or hole is cut into the surface of the door and they are then inserted into the door. They are available in a variety of grades and can be used with knobs and levers to open and close the door.
The main distinction between mortise and cylinder locks is that only a particular key is needed to unlock these kinds of locks. The pins are fixed by springs and pins with different sizes. When the correct key is inserted and the pins are aligned with each other and the cylinder is able to rotate. This enables the latch bolt to retract so that the door can be opened.
When the wrong key is used, the pins aren't aligned properly and stop the cylinder from moving. This is why it's important to use only the right key when you need to access your home or business.

The cylinder is positioned inside the door's body and is connected to the operating trim by an oval or half-round extension. The cylinder also has small notches on its sides that are designed to align with key notches once the correct key is put in. Once the cylinder has been moved by the latch bolt, it will follow.
A strike plate is a metal plate that is attached to the door frame and catches the latch bolt that is projected from the lock. The strike plate is usually constructed of steel that is heavy-gauge and attached to the door frame with screws. It also has a strike opening which the latch bolt of the lock fits.
When replacing a cylindrical lock ensure that you use the proper tools to remove the old lock's handle, knob and latch bolt. Mark the location of the new latch bolt and strike on the frame and door after removing the old hardware. Once the latch bolt and strike plate are in place, it's a great idea to test the operation of the lock by pressing against it with your fingers. If the latch bolt and strike plate are damaged or do not operate correctly, it's a good time to consider replacing them.
Key-Locked Latch
This type of lock is controlled by a key that is inserted from the outside, and a lever or knob on the inside. This kind of lock is designed for doors that are not at risk of being tampered with, such as in offices. This kind of lock allows the outside lever to be in either a locked or unlocked position and the inside knob/lever is always free for immediate exit. The key is only needed to pull the latchbolt back when the door is closed.
The pins in a key-lock are oriented and arranged along a line that's called the shear line. When the right key is inserted into the lock, these pins are aligned with the shear line and the plug will be turned to open the latchbolt. If you've ever encountered keys that fit perfectly into a lock, but isn't able to open, it could be because one of the pins isn't aligned with the shear line.
Face plates can also be found on a few locks. They can be decorative or provide strength and security to the locking mechanism. It's common to see these plates on mortice locks and rim locks that have reversed spring bolts.
A strike plate is also available. It is usually connected to both the door frame and the jamb. It also is fitted with an opening through which the bolt is guided from the cylinder and into the lock. This is typically used in conjunction with deadbolts for additional security.
Then, there's the cylinder, which is pins that are aligned with the key's point to keep it from turning. A good quality cylinder is very difficult to break into if you don't have the right tools and knowledge of how to pick it. To lock the front door, turn the key in the same direction that the door opens. If the door opens using the right hand, for example the key needs to be turned clockwise in order to secure the door. To unlock you can turn the key counterclockwise. This is different than other locks, like Chubb locks, which require you to turn your key in the opposite direction of opening the door.
Keyless Latch
A keyless latch allows you to lock and unlock your door without the use of a traditional key. The locks are operated using the smartphone app or access code or key. Some models have a hidden camera to provide added security. When selecting a keyless lock, consider your security needs and compatibility with your doors and hardware. Some keyless locks require special door preparations or alterations to be installed, so make sure you make sure to read the specifications of the manufacturer as well as installation instructions before installing.
Several companies are developing smart locks that replace traditional locks with keys and offer additional security features. They are more robust and can be opened through fingerprint, code or facial recognition. Some smart locks also have security features that prevent tampering and can tell when a door has been opened with an unauthorized key or force.
